Disclosures & contact
Who pays me, what that does and doesn’t buy, and how to tell me I’ve got something wrong.
Industry relationships
I implant both FDA-approved hypoglossal nerve stimulators, and I have a financial or professional relationship with the makers of both. Naming them here rather than burying them is the point of this page.
- Inspire Medical Systems — paid consultant.
- Nyxoah (maker of Genio) — clinical investigator, and a member of the clinical events committee for company-sponsored trials, including ACCCESS and BREATHE. A clinical events committee independently adjudicates adverse events reported during a trial.
- LivaNova and Avivomed — consulting or research support.
Those relationships point in opposite directions, which is worth saying plainly: I am paid by the maker of each device I compare against the other.
What none of it bought
No manufacturer has reviewed, funded, edited, or contributed to any page on this site. Nobody at any of these companies sees a page before it publishes, and nobody has ever asked to.
Figures on this site are sourced to FDA review documents and the published trials rather than to manufacturer marketing materials. Where a study I cite was funded or written by the company that makes the device, I say so at the point I cite it. Where the news is unflattering to a device — a lower real-world response rate, a reoperation rate, an endpoint that was never published — it is on the page.
What this site is, and is not
Sleep Apnea Implant is my personal educational project. It is independent of, and not endorsed by or affiliated with, VCU Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, or any other employer. Mention of my VCU role describes where I work; it does not imply institutional sponsorship of anything here.
Nothing on this site is medical advice, and reading it does not create a physician-patient relationship. It is written to help you have a better conversation with your own surgeon, not to replace one.
There is no advertising on this site, no sponsored content, no affiliate links, and no advertising or third-party tracking pixels. The only measurement I run is first-party, cookieless page-view counting, described on the privacy page. Nobody pays for placement here, and there is nothing to place.
Found an error? Tell me.
I would rather hear it from you than leave it up. If something here is wrong, out of date, or unclear — whether you are a patient, a colleague, or a journalist — write to contact@sleepapneaimplant.org.
Please read this before you write. This address is for questions and corrections about the content of this site. It is not monitored for medical questions, it is not for urgent problems, and writing to it does not create a physician-patient relationship. Please do not send personal health information.
If you are a patient of mine, use MyChart or my office. If this is an emergency, call 911.
How this site is written
Every page is written by me. Clinical figures are traced to a primary source — usually an FDA review document, a peer-reviewed publication, or a manufacturer’s official labeling — and each page lists its references. Where the evidence is thin, contested, or missing, the page says so rather than rounding up.
Pages carrying a “last medically reviewed” date have been read end to end on that date. When I correct something material after publication, I fix it and update that date.
